Who are your heroes?

When Nelson Mandela died, millions of people mourned the loss of a hero, which is what many people worldwide considered him to be.

In 2004 he was among the Time 100 most influential people of the year because he “remains perhaps the only figure on the world stage who is an unambiguous moral giant. That is not to say he is pure. He is a hero precisely because he always admitted his errors and then tried to rise above them. And he has never stopped learning.” Excerpt from Time Magazine The 2004 Time 100. It wasn’t the first time for him to be on the list. He had had two previous appearances.

The Time 100 has been published every year since 1999. It includes personalities that are to be recognized for changing the world, the people who inspire, who entertain and who challenge. On the list you will find entertainers, sportspeople, leaders, entrepeneurs, pioneers, and scientists, among others.

However, it has also been a matter of controversy. How to decide who should be considered a hero, for instance? Does the position of President of US mean that you will be on the list only because you are the leader of a very powerful nation? Can the influence be measured by how much it affects the a whole community, even if it is small?  For more information about its history, selectiona criteria and other interesting facts visit Wikipedia

Also, you might want to watch the video below. It answers these questions:

What is the list about?

How can people be influenced?

What belief justifies the entrants on the list?

Now we are reaching the end of the year and the 2013 The Time 100 has been published.

I would like to suggest creating our own list. All of us have people we look up to -from history icons, football players to our school teachers. Who are your heroes? Why?
