Story Corps is an organization that has recorded and collected over 45,000 stories from people in USA. 90,000 people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs have taken part in this project since 2003. The stories are available on the webiste: Story Corps Stories
I think it is a beautiful initiative. Giving people the chance to record and share something which is important to them is wonderful. And we all take advantage in the end. As listeners, we become aware of how different and alike we are. Some stories are really touching and others have very powerful messages that we can all relate to.
As it says on the website: “We do this to remind one another of our shared humanity, strengthen and build the connections between people, teach the value of listening, and weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that every life matters. At the same time, we will create an invaluable archive of American voices and wisdom for future generations.” Click here for more information: Story Corps Website
For English language learners the stories are a source of valuable cultural imput and a great way of improving listening skills. So I encourage to take some time to listen and enjoy.
To celebrate their 10th anniversay they have just released an animated feature called Listening is An Act of Love. It explains how the project started.
Watch and answer the following questions (start to minute 4.00)
